Ultimately, Shinobu is a character made of hidden layers. As a child, she was considered a "tomboy", often picking fights and arguing, never backing down from speaking her mind despite often saying rude / unpleasant things. Moreover, Shinobu was born physically weak and small, coming in under 5 feet tall fully grown and being unable to fully decapitate a demon, despite virtually all demon slayers being required to do so. Shinobu was facilitated in her behavior by her older sister, Kanae Kochou, who acted as a buffer between Shinobu and the world, being extremely pleasant and good-natured to offset her little sisters behaviour.

Shinobu changed when Kanae died. Kanae had a dream of being able to peacefully live side by side with demons, to become friends with them, and when a demon killed her, she begged Shinobu to leave the Demon Slayers and have a normal life. Shinobu refused and swore revenge. Now, as the head of the Butterfly Mansion, a Demon Slayer medical building where many young girls orphaned / abandoned by demon activity resided, Shinobu adopted her older sister's persona, putting on a mask of grace and poise to hide her intense feelings of rage and loathing.

Outwardly, Shinobu presents as kind, understanding, and confident to those she interacts with— but her cruelty and anger comes out whenever facing demons. Trying to fulfill her sister's dream is beyond Shinobu, but as it was Kanae's dream, Shinobu feels bound to try. So Shinobu wears a mask that she rarely lets slip, especially not in front of others. This hidden well of poisonous anger inside her physically manifests when she begins to ingest lethal amounts (for demons) of wisteria poison to make up for her lack of strength, knowing she'll never be able to go toe to toe in a purely physical fight with the Upper Moon Demon that killed her sister. Instead, she turns her body into a bomb, dying and being consumed in order to get her revenge.

Her knowledge of pharmaceuticals comes from her family, as she is considered one of the most intelligent hashira as she developed the poison she uses to kill demons herself. Moreover, she also is seen creating antidotes and recovery plans for Demon Slayers that require medical aid. Her intelligence is her strongest weapon, secondary even to her pointed stinger blade.

Shinobu is also seen being extremely caring and loving towards those who require aid; saving Kanao from slavery and providing a home and place in the Demon Slayers for Aoi. She was also seen by Zenitsu being extremely kind to many people who had been infected by the Elder Brother Spider Demon and thus turned into mutated spiders. She has a strong maternal instinct towards those "less powerful" than her, wanting to protect them so they can have normal lives.

She is seen being very playful, either maliciously towards demons she wishes to kill, or coyly towards those she considers friends. This is seen during the Spider Demon arc, with her toying with the Elder Sister Spider Demon, saying that they could "become friends" so long as the demon "paid for all the lives she'd taken." Shinobu suggests extreme torture as repentance, all while smiling and claiming they could be friends once the torture was over. On a similar vein, she teases Giyuu Tomioka about being disliked, and says that she, personally "hates people like him", though the two are revealed to be friends and enjoy speaking to each other. Shinobu often says one thing and means another, her duplicitous nature a running theme with her entire character.

Shinobu is also seen to be very perceptive, knowing exactly what to say to the main trio when they're upset to uplift their spirits. She is seen as being able to see past the defences of people just as she can get past the armour of demons. This innate insight seems to be a feature of those who study Flower and Insect breathing, as Kanae and Kanao both are show to have special abilities when it comes to sight, though each of the sisters manifest this ability differently.

Much of Shinobu's rage comes from her own physical weakness. Other hashira's say that Shinobu is often seen to be sickly, and Sanemi always asks Shinobu if she's feeling well whenever they meet. Paired with the fact she was unable to save her sister or save any of the girls at the Butterfly Mansion, Shinobu is endlessly frustrated at her own faults and tries to use her intellect to make up for her shortcomings, seen by her making poisons and altering Flower Breathing to create Insect Breathing.

Shinobu is the insect hashira, meaning she is one of the top ranked swordsmen in the Kimetsu no Yaiba universe. She specializes in "insect breathing," a sword style which utilizes poison, toxins, and multitudes of small cuts to add up to a large one. She is the only hashira who is not strong enough to cut off a demon's head with her sword, so instead she creates and coats her sword in a poison made of wisteria to land killing blows.

Starting with a scyther, a bug type, reflects her status as the insect harisha, while also being a subtle irony in that scyther is a "strong bladed" pokemon, while Shinobu is considered a "weak bladed" hashira.
